Unlike residential property, there is no statutory right in commercial tenancy law in Rhineland-Palatinate to unilaterally adjust the rent to a local rent index or the "local comparable rent" (§ 558 BGB). Rent adjustments for business spaces are governed by the principle of freedom of contract (§ 311 BGB) and general tenancy provisions (§§ 535-580a BGB) of the German Civil Code (Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch – BGB), which originally came into force on 1 January 1900.
